DarkScene: Hi Niklas. Ihr habt mit "We Are The Void" (zum review) euer mittlerweile neuntes Album im 21. Jahr des Bestehens am Start. Was geht dir dazu durch den Kopf.
Niklas Sundin: Hi! Momentan läuft alles ziemlich gut, vielen Dank!

DarkScene: "We Are The Void" ist meiner Ansicht nach euer bestes Album seit "Projector".

"ThereIn" live from "Where Death Is Most Alive" DVD.

Niklas Sundin: Vielen Dank!

"Shredding bores me to death, ha ha!"

"Misery’s Crown" from "Fiction" (zum review)

Niklas Sundin: Ich hab eigentlich keine richtigen Favoriten.

"Lost To Apathy" from "Character" (zum review)

DarkScene: Was steht im Jahre 2010 an.

Niklas Sundin: “Hey, a power chord can't be minor! Or major for that matter. I like songs, not guitarists.”

english version of the interview
---------------------------------------------

DarkScene: Hi Niklas. It’s been 21 years since the inception of the band and "We Are The Void" is already your ninth studio album. How are things going in the Dark Tranquillity camp these days?

Niklas Sundin: Hi! Things are going very well, thanks! We just arrived in Boston for the first show of the US tour and have stocked up on beer and food on Wal-mart.

DarkScene: Dark Tranquillity is well known for high quality music. You haven’t released a single weak album so far. The band seems to be very tight musically and on a personal level as well. Are you really such a close bunch of guys or are you just that professional?

Niklas Sundin: Well, all the original members grew up on the same street and lived literally within a 200 meter radius of each other, so we're very tight. Of course we have other friends and of course being in a band demands that you can work professinally as well, but it certainly helps to have a good chemistry.

DarkScene: I think that "We Are The Void" is your best album since the release of "Projector" due to its immense versatility. It just seems to be a little bit more diverse than its predecessors. What’s your take on that?

Niklas Sundin: I definitely agree on the versatility part. The past few albums were a bit one-dimensional for my taste, and "We are the void" is certainly more diverse and experimental. Every song is different from the next one, and we're trying some new things out while still retaining the classic D.T. traits.

DarkScene: In retrospect, how do you see the "Projector" album today? It was the first time that Mikael Stanne’s vocals were very clear for the better part of the album. At the same time you also reduced the degree of heaviness. I personally love the album and I also think that in the live environment the songs from "Projector" work extremely well but there were a lot of negative reviews around at this point in time.

Niklas Sundin: Yes, the initial response was a bit varied, and as expected a lot of the die hard fans sent angry emails wondered what the fuck was going on and how we could release such a tame album, but many of those people wrote back after a few weeks saying how they have learned to love the album and that their first reaction was false. My attitude at the time was that it was more rewarding to present people with something that they wouldn't like and that would require attention and a certain reprogramming of their tastes. To a lot of people, "Projector" was the first album with clear vocals that they really liked, and I'm pretty sure that they're grateful for that today. My own view? I like "Projector", and it was a necessary album at the time. Perhaps "Day to end" shouldn't have been included though.

DarkScene: Do you think that "We Are The Void" will once again be kind of polarizing and maybe disappoint a few of your hardcore fans?

Niklas Sundin: Definitely - but you can't satisfy everyone. It's not a super catchy album, so already judging from the reactions of the internet leak, a lot of people say that they thought it was so-so at first but completely loves it after 10 listens.

DarkScene: I think that "We Are The Void" perfectly combines everything that makes Dark Tranquillity such a strong band. This album might just be the pinnacle of your career so far. Do you agree?

Niklas Sundin: It's hard to judge your own material; I usually just say that every album is different and that it represents the state of the band at the time - no more, no less. It's impossible for us to rate the recordings since they were made in completely different situations and with different goals in mind.

DarkScene: Tell us a little bit about "Shadow In Your Blood" which is undoubtedly one of the best Dark Tranquillity songs of all time. This particular song sounds very modern, yet shows old-school qualities and has an incredible groove.

Niklas Sundin: Thanks! Not sure what to say about it. I wrote the music, and it's one of the songs that the other guys didn't really like very much at first but that got recorded anyway. All of us got positively surprised by the final result, but for a long time we didn't think that it'd even end up on the album.

DarkScene: Have there ever been arguments within the band concerning the musical progression of the band?

Niklas Sundin: Always. "Arguments" might be the wrong word, but all members have VERY different tastes about music and since everyone contributes to the songwriting, there's a constant clash of opinions. We're a democratic band, so everyone is free to object to something. On one hand, it's annoying when your own opinion usually is in the minority, but on the other hand I think that this friction plays a large part in us sounding the way we do, and it keeps our music dynamic.

"Monochromatic Stains" from "Damage Done"

DarkScene: You are a founding member of one of the most popular, most important and over all best Melodic Death Metal bands from Sweden. How did things change in your band over the course of 20 years when it comes to the songwriting process, the interaction between band members and the status of Dark Tranquillity in general?

Niklas Sundin: I guess one could fill a whole book with this topic, and I'm not sure how to keep it down to fit an interview like this. All of these things - songwriting, social interaction, band status - have changed many times over; we were 14-15 years old when starting to play, and naturally you're a completely different person at that age.

DarkScene: Who or what was your initial inspiration or influence that made you start playing the guitar and as a consequence become the co-founder of Dark Tranquillity? Who are your personal musical heroes?

Niklas Sundin: When we started the band, we all loved early Kreator, Sabbat (UK), Merciless, Helloween, Manowar and the rest of the usual suspects. I never really had any musical heroes in the usual sense of the word. My music interest as a listener isn't actually very big at all and I never had a fave guitarist or anything. Shredding bores me to death, ha ha!

DarkScene: Have there ever been moments where the band was considering to call it quits? Have you personally ever thought about quitting music in general and start a completely new career?

Niklas Sundin: I don't think that there has been any real crisis so far. At the time of "Projector", we felt that we either could quit or try to create something ompletely different, and we chose to record this weird album. Of course the motivation can't always be super high for 20 years, but we keep going for as long as it feels rewarding. If that means one or ten more years is impossible to say.

DarkScene: For outsiders, the music scene in Gothenburg seems to be like one big “loving” family. Bands like Dark Tranquillity, In Flames and countless others developed side by side. Is this impression correct?

Niklas Sundin: I guess this is partly correct. When reading outsider's summary of the scene, some things tend to be right and some not. It's usually very simplified, and the chronology is rarely correct. We formed 4 years before In flames, but we're usually considered to have started as the same time, and there are other details that people usually get wrong, but it's not my job to be the history writer, ha ha! The atmosphere was always good, and I can't remember any sense of competition at all.

DarkScene: What are your favorite Dark Tranquillity albums? Which ones do you consider the best and which ones were of utmost importance for your career?

Niklas Sundin: I don't really have any faves. As mentioned before, they're all made with different goals in mind, and since the mindset and ideas for - say - "Projector" is completely different that what we strived for with "Skydancer", there's no common ground for comparasion. Career-wise, I guess that "The gallery" was the most important.

DarkScene: What’s the commercial status of your band? Metal fans think of you as “big shots”. But is this sufficient to live the life of a “rock star”? In 2002 you told us that you wouldn’t be able to make a living off your music. Did this change for the better? If so, when?

Niklas Sundin: Yes, these days we mostly make a living of the music, and this has been the case for the last 2 years or so. Some of us still work, but that's from our own choise. But it's no "rock star" life for sure, ha ha!

DarkScene: How tight are the relationships between the band members in times when you’re not on tour or in the studio? You’re all not 18 anymore and I’m sure everybody enjoys a private life as well…

Niklas Sundin: Sure - if you're living in the same bus for 7 weeks straight, you might not hang out every single day when you get home, but we do socialize more than most other band from what I've understood

DarkScene: For you personally, what were your biggest moments with the band so far?

Niklas Sundin: Releasing the first CD for sure.

DarkScene: What was your most embarrassing moment as a musician so far?
Niklas Sundin: There have been some hassle with equpment problems, guitars going out of tune and so forth, but I can't recally any super embarrasing events.
DarkScene: A lot of people might not know about this, but you have a second „income“ that is based on your talent in graphical design. Tell us a little bit about Cabin Fever Media – a design company which created artworks for Sentenced, In Flames or Arch Enemy – just to name a few.

Niklas Sundin: Yep. Well, it's more or less my day job for the past 12 years. I've always been drawing and painting and started freelancing as an illustrator and web designer around the time "Projector" came out. I do a lot of other things as well, but the work in the music field is what's mostly visible to the public.

DarkScene: In 2008, long-time bass player Michael Nicklasson left the band. In September the band announced Daniel Antonsson (Dimension Zero, Ex-Soilwork) as a replacement. How much did Daniel contribute to the new album? Are you still in contact with Michael?

Niklas Sundin: Daniel contributed with his great playing to the album and the band vibe definitely got vitalized when he joined. Michael came to the studio to listen to the new album; I think he has a new band going on.

DarkScene: Let’s mention the "Where Death Is Most Alive" DVD from 2009. Would you agree if I claim that this tremendous DVD captures the magic of your live shows much better than the somewhat disappointing "Live Damage" package?

Niklas Sundin: Totally. It's not even an opinion that "Live damage" is disappointing, it's pure fact, ha ha! It was a decent release for its time - where it still was rare for metal bands to put out live DVD's - but it hasn't aged very well. With the new DVD, we realized that we really had to make something that would be of the highest standard possible, not just for a metal DVD but for music DVD's in general. Otherwise there would be no point.

DarkScene: What are your plans for 2010? I’m convinced you will tour your asses off and also play some festivals. Will you be coming to Austria? Maybe even play a gig in Innsbruck?

Niklas Sundin: There will be tons of touring for sure. This 7-week US tour is the kick off, and then most of 2010 will be spent on the road. Our booking agent is working on scheduling everything, but I'm sure that Austria will be included on the European tour. I guess that we'll know for sure in a couple of weeks.

DarkScene: As a musician, do you still have one big dream you want to fulfill yourself? With or without Dark Tranquillity...

Niklas Sundin: I have lots of musical ideas and plans that I want to turn into reality when things are a bit calmer with D.T., but they're not any huge dreams that NEED to happen as such.

DarkScene: With which bands would you love the share the stage at one time?

Niklas Sundin: There's no "dream band" that I would want to share the stage with as a symbolic act of kinship. There are bands that I'd love to see live, but then I wouldn't want to bother with playing myself as well, ha ha! As a coincidence, one of the very few bands that I'd really want to see - Ulver - played in Gothenburg the same day as we had to leave for the US, which sucked beyond belief.

DarkScene: THAT ONE QUESTION from Metal fans all over the world: why the hell are there so many awesome bands in Scandinavia and Sweden in particular?

Niklas Sundin: Ha ha! No idea...I don't necessarly agree that Sweden has so many good bands, but if I should speculate I'd say that the good material standard makes it possible for young people to form bands and learn to play without much effort or investment.

DarkScene: Which band(s) should finally call it quits and not bother mankind anymore?

Niklas Sundin: If someone enjoys playing, they should do so. My own taste is so selective that most bands don't really do anything for me, but that doesn't mean that they should quit.
The US is now graced by our presence

DarkScene: Rate the following guitar players on a scale from 1 (breaks his fingers with a simple A Minor power chord) to 10 (guitar god) and add a brief statement to each of the mentioned individuals:

Niklas Sundin: Hey, a power chord can't be minor! Or major for that matter. I like songs, not guitarists. I honestly wouldn't be able to identify the players below in a blind test (maybe apart from Mikael, who clearly would suck), and some of them I'm not sure if I even heard. So I hope you don't mind me skipping the individual ratings here.

DarkScene: What are your first thoughts when hearing the following band names?
Niklas Sundin:
At The Gates = Hope to see their DVD on this tour
Europe = "The final countdown"
Gorgoroth = "Satan-Prometheus". Great song!
Swedish Erotica = No idea
Deicide = First album is a classic
W.A.S.P. = No real relation to them
Motörhead = Same thing here
Hardcore Superstar = Last album is pretty good
Crash Diet = Never heard
Guns N Roses = No real opinion
GWAR = Never heard
In Flames = Consistent
Iron Maiden = "Flight 666"
Metallica = Legends with a few rocky albums
Mötley Crüe = Not my cup of tea
Dark Tranquillity = Could be better

DarkScene: Pick your poison:
Niklas Sundin:
Beer or wine = Wine
Summer or winter = Summer
Nightwish or Volbeat = Neither. Sorry, not just my taste.
Angela Gossow or Tarja Turunen = Angela
Christianity or atheism = Atheism. With a capital "A".lol!!! (thx a lot Niklas..;-)
Homer Simpson or Al Bundy = Peter Griffin
Henrik Larsson or Zlatan Ibrahimovic = Sorry, no sports interest here.
Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie = Jennifer
Stockholm or Gothenburg = The world
Europe or Abba = Abba
Soccer or Icehockey = Neither
Poison or Deicide = Deicide
USA or Asia = Asia

Doing a Darkscene Email Interview or relaxing with 3 dream girls at a pool in Miami = Who says that I'm not doing both at this moment?

Austria or Germany (be aware!) = Ha ha, I'll either piss you or Century media off here. Well, Germany for the efficiency and Austria for the scenery.

DarkScene: Your 5 all-time faves (album/record)

Niklas Sundin: I don't really have all-time faves; these things change the whole time.

DarkScene: Your recent faves (album/record)

Niklas Sundin: Haven't been that much of a listener recently, but:
