Es steckt also auch einiges an Geld in King Of Asgard.

Wann darf man denn damit rechnen?

Also los….entscheide dich:

Immortal = Blashyrk mighty raven dark!
Primordial = Episch…

Lemmy = Legende

DarkScene: Zum Abschluss bitte deine aktuellen Faves (artist/record):
Karl Beckman:
Unleashed - "As Yggdrasil trembles" (to the review)
Enslaved - "Axioma Ethica Odini" (to the review)

Hail Darkscene and it’s readers!

-------------------------------------------
English version of the interview:

DarkScene: First of all, congratulations on your fabulous "Fi'Mbulvintr" album – a perfect Viking Death Metal record which combines the charm of the good old days with contemporary sound. Please tell us about how and why King Of Asgard was created. How did this Viking Metal supergroup come to life?

Karl Beckman: Oh, thanks for those words! Well King Of Asgard was brought to life in 2008 by me, Karl Beckman, after dissolving my musical projects I had at the time. It all started with me teaming up with my long time absent fellow worker, Karsten Larsson, who once was my accomplice in the now long defunct viking horde Mithotyn. After getting back together, spending years apart, our decision was made to go back to our roots both musically as well as we chosed to head for our Norse heritage in lyrical approach. This being something I really longed for. Later on a bunch of songs were written and in January 2009 we entered Lotang Studio for the recording of the debut demo, the seven tracker, "Prince of Märings". From there and onward it went and in late 2009 Jonas Albrektsson (my long time friend) earlier in Thy Primordial joined King of Asgard on bass and the line-up was strengthen even further and complete at the time. Things started moving, with a Metal Blade deal, debut album recorded etc., a successful friend gathering. The aim of building King of Asgard was basically going back to our very roots really, making the music we're strongly bond to and longed for to some extent. That's in short the case of KoA and the story behind it.

DarkScene: Your debut "Fi'Mbulvintr" made you reach the top of the Viking Death genre overnight – so to speak. Did you even realize how strong your song material would be or was it a little bit of a surprise to receive such overwhelming reactions?

Karl Beckman: Yeah the reactions has been great thus far and we're getting extremely good reviews and with the album out for only two months now it is remarkable how well it’s been received. It's totally crazy, and of course we love it. We knew we'd done a really good album and we're very proud of it but wasn't really expecting press and people to understand it that much as what they did or are. They actually got the whole thing (not everyone though) with what we wanted to achieve with our music, not being innovative or such but rather being powerful and well written, capturing the sounds of the past. So we're a little bit overwhelmed as well as surprised at the moment with all the kind words, but hey, that's really an easy burden to carry! Thanks a thousand to all and everyone supporting us, it strengthen us for sure. We had hopes but never dared thinking it would be as great received as it has become. Awesome and we really need to hold the situation and so forth, so hope we can get a lot of gigs and such to give something back to people. Guess being on such great label as Metal Blade helps quite a lot to but in the end we’re responsible for getting some good shit together and so forth.

DarkScene: Do you consider King Of Asgard as a complete new start of more like a continuation of your work with Mithotyn?

Karl Beckman: To be honest the first thought I had when I asked Karsten was to more or less go back to play the Mithotyn style, no secrets, but the more songs I wrote this was no longer the goal I once had in mind. Without Stefan playing and writing music with us it would nevertheless be the same. So, KoA is a new band/new start that we work on getting its own approach. I think we do, but of course the past will follow and that is an obvious thing. So, there's much we have in common and the influence is inevitable. Guess we have to live with that for quite a while but KoA will surely stand strong and we don't really bother all the Mithotyn comparisons because it is so obvious and natural. Neither do we use it to get through, we rather try to build our own foundation
I think by using Mithotyn as a name or going fully back we would be really bound to our past and everyone would expect us to be and stick to that. There could not be anything done outside those frames so to say. With KoA we can start from the very beginning and do whatever we feel like doing.

DarkScene: Please tell our readers what you’ve done musically since the split of Mithotyn. I know of your involvement in Infernal Vengeance but haven’t heard anything since?

Karl Beckman: Actually that’s what I’ve done during the years since the Mithotyn days. I’ve done some other shit as well, among others, I used to do a Judas Priest cover/tribute band together with my brother Per (r.i.p.) for some years but you know such bands don’t get much attention. So I’ve been around so to say but now I’m back with full force and it’s great being back where I feel I belong!

DarkScene: Did you keep up to date of what’s happening in the Heavy Metal world and did you follow the rise of the Viking/Pagan sound while you were taking your „musical time-out“?

Karl Beckman: Yeah of course I’ve been into it all the time, though, more or less. But I guess I’m more into the ‘old’ bands and such not getting through with the new ones and the, say, current metal scene. So I did not see the rise of the Viking/pagan sound except for that one noticed the success Amon Amarth and the likes had, which they truly deserve though. So I’ve been keeping me updated where I felt updating was due.

DarkScene: Did the recent popularity of the Viking genre influence your decision to start King Of Asgard in any way? The timing for the release of your debut album seems to be perfect to reach a broader audience.

Karl Beckman: This project, as it was in the beginning, was absolutely not put together to gain popularity in an easy way, not at all. It was basically a mere egoistic thought at the beginning, getting back to our roots and do what we or I felt was missing. We started it just out of pleasure of the whole thing and for getting use of some material I had lying around and that this further on lead to a major contract and getting our debut album recorded in a short period of time is merely a great coincidence. So if we did get it done on timing and so it is just great and helps us quite a bit on the way. This is something we do out of heart and conviction for the music that we deal with and not to gain a broad audience. But if we do, it is just great of course!

DarkScene: Who’s responsible for the songwriting in King Of Asgard?

Karl Beckman: For this album the songs has been done by me (it just flows… for now that is) so I just put the pieces together. I present it to the other guys at the rehearsal room and from there we work on details and make the arrangements and the songs turn in to real songs. It could be that a song is finished and done by just some hours or we can work on a song until it's recorded, all of us. It differs but that's mainly how we've worked for this album. In the future I guess it's going to look a little bit different as the situation is different with us being four now. But we all work well together so the songs kind of piece themselves together. It’s the end result that’s important and we’re focused on that all of us and thus work very democratic.

DarkScene: How many old song ideas did you process for King Of Asgard and where are the similarities to Mitothyn?

Karl Beckman: Every song is written directly for KoA and is not earlier done or made for Mithotyn. But as I wrote like fifty percent of the music back in the days it of course leave its mark and has similarities to what we sounded like. So it’s written for King of Asgard and has my kind of writing combined with the arrangement we do together and if that is similar to something I’ve done earlier well it no surprise really, this is the way it turns out. King of Asgard has many similarities to Mithotyn and that’s nothing strange or secret as well as it is obvious that this is the case.

DarkScene: If you compare the songriting on "Fi'Mbulvintr" with your work in your former band, the songs seem to be „catchier“ than before. Was that an intentional decision?

Karl Beckman: Yeah, not really meant to be catchier or so but more straight forward and hard hitting. And this is again how I write. In comparison to Mithotyn, which was much more complex, longer and not that catchy. That may be the result of the combining song writing between me and Stefan. The songs so far written for KoA has just come natural and as earlier said it is written with heart and conviction and not to be as catchy as possible or intentionally reminding of our past. We’ve tried to keep it simple and easy to captivate and if that is catchy I think it’s only in terms of positive ones.

DarkScene: Could you please tell us a little bit about the lyrics on "Fi'Mbulvintr"?

1. The lyrical themes in KoA comes mainly in ancestral portraits, Norse mythology, Viking sagas, the religion of our forefathers and the actual atmosphere of the time. This with the reflection of our personal ideals and touch, not being strict or limited. We want to have an open way to go and not restrict ourselves with just doing one specific type of lyrics. Of course, still to capture the above mentioned lyrical approach. So it varies quite a lot on "fi’mbulvintr". From plain history to making a dig at Christianity and so forth.

DS: Do you actually mind hearing those comparisons with your former band? Do they make you angry?

Karl Beckman: No, not angry, because it’s so obvious and we understand that it comes around. It is no surprise at all that much is dealing with it but it’s, well should I say, tiring. Guess this is something we have to deal with and it’s really no problem. It’s just to bad it kind of lose the focus on what is important here, King of Asgard and the future, rather than looking back. So it doesn’t make us angry as we knew it would come and stay for some time. Just hope it’ll not be a top topic for all time. It’s obvious they occur and we can’t help or blame people being interested in our past. It’s natural and welcome, though tiring.

DarkScene: Please share your thoughts on the impressive artwork of this album…

1. Ola Larsson is the great artist behind it! He’s a long time friend of the band and have made several covers for i.e. Thy Primordial, Indungeon etc. We were extremely picky on how and what the cover would look like and we wanted it to depict the title Fi'mbulvintr (fimbul winter) to some extent. We gave him guidelines to start from as we had in mind what we wanted it to be like and from there on we worked. Not really giving him free hands but sure he made much impression with his ideas as well. He sent us samples all the way and we just told him what to change and what to keep until all of us were satisfied and the work was done. Approximately it took some three to four months due to that he was pretty busy at the moment and we were, as I said, pretty picky. We wanted it kind of back to the roots, (as with the music in many ways), you know, like all the great cover art presented on the death/black metal albums etc. in the early 90ies and so forth, it's awesome at most references for sure. We're so satisfied with it and the response upon it is great! Check him out, he's the best.

DS: How important was the input from Andy LaRocque?

Karl Beckman: Me and Karsten have worked with Andy earlier on so it was an easy choice as we knew pretty much what to expect in terms of working with him although this is an entirely new project. We told him right away what we wanted with this band/record and he did what he could, does best and managed. Andy came through with some really good additions to the record so he sure made some important inputs. Not many but some, we’re quite defined ourselves on what to achieve but he helps us on the way. Andy is a really cool and down to earth dude so it was just perfect working with such a pro! We're proud of it and won't hesitate to return!

DarkScene: Being with a great label like Metal Blade must truly be a blessing for your band. You also made a great video clip for the song "Einhärjar". What do you expect commercially from this album? What are the record company’s expectations?

Karl Beckman: Yeah being on Metal Blade really makes things easier in many ways. Things get done in time and there are people that takes care and make things happen as planned. But this time around I guess many of those things are made through us being determined to get things moving. As an example, the video clip, which is our move. It’s done by us and we hired a good friend named Rickard Moneus to do it. It’s not that we expect to get commercial or huge, we just feel we’re doing great music and we want to get it out as much as possible. We feel we’ve been in this for so long and now, signed to Metal Blade, we just want to do it in a good way and take our chance. Both for us and Metal Blade and foremost to give the audience its full support by doing such things. So as the newcomers we are we don’t really know what to expect and I guess same goes for M.B. but surely we all want things to move on. Strange to strive for the opposite. And from what we gather we’re gaining some fans to our flock through our record as well as through the video.

DarkScene: With Karsten Larsson you have an old pal of yours on board. Is there any chance for a new Mithotyn album in the future? Or maybe a few special festival shows? Reunions are not that uncommon in today’s music landscape…

1. No I don’t see any of such things coming in the near or distant future. Sure again we’re being linked to our past and that’s not strange but King of Asgard is what people will get further on. We’re doing this whole-heartedly and it takes all the time we can offer so starting that up again would not work. I think people will get used to this and get along with KoA to its full. It will just take some time as one always tend to look back and be afraid of getting into things unfamiliar. Albums and shows will be done with KoA though, be sure!

DS: Any touring plans for King Of Asgard? What would be your favorite bands to tour with?

Karl Beckman: There are unfortunately no tour plans at this writing moment. We are mainly trying to get single gigs and sorted ones such as festivals. So we’ll see what happens and what will be booked further on. If interested get in touch! But sure if the right time and proposal occur we’ll be doing it. There are tons of bands that would be great to share stage with. Could be Unleashed, Enslaved, Satyricon etc, and a lot of interesting bands and people to that.

DarkScene: I hope we’ll be able to report about a second King Of Asgard album very soon. Is there a tentative timetable for another release?

Karl Beckman: You surely will be able to do that. We’re in writing mode but have not started to try things out yet. There is a tentative time table for the next one, be sure. Just hope we’ll be able to match this one out as we feel somewhat a performance anxiety to top the debut. But when we’re at it I guess it won´t be a trouble. It will just be fun getting in to it. Time will tell.

DarkScene: Which bands or albums would you recommend for Viking fans beyond the Heavy Metal genre? Who creates true Nordic vibes in their music?

Karl Beckman: That would, without doubt, be one album that has inspired me/us while making "Fi’mbulvintr" and so forth. Jan Johansson and the album "Jazz på Svenska". It has a touch of melancholy to it that capture the Nordic vibes and that has been a inspiring thing for KoA. There’s a lot more of course like the traditional folk songs from our heathen North.

DarkScene: Who are your musical idols? Which bands or musicians did influence you personally?

Karl Beckman: These days I'm listening to pretty much everything that I find being good music. Of course metal in general but also "old timer rock" as AC/DC. So it widely spreads but for this particular genre we're in I like the big names for sure such as mighty Bathory and Unleashed, Isengard, Dismember, Amon Amarth, etc. I simply like quality music that lights my spark.

DarkScene: Early on, was there a significant moment – a specific song or album maybe – that made you pick up an instrument and start a band?

Karl Beckman: I was blessed to have a brother who listened to Judas Priest, Motörhead and such. So from the early years of my life there have always been metal and hard rock around me. I owe him big time for my interest in the metal scene and the fact that I started to play the guitar. These days I'm listening to pretty much everything that I find being good music. Of course metal in general but also "old timer rock" as AC/DC.

DarkScene: Is there any new stuff in the Rock and Metal scene that can impress you or are you a 100% old school?

Karl Beckman: Of course there is. But I somehow tend to go more for the old style and bands I’ve been into for long. But if there’s something new attracting me, which there are, I go for it. As I said above, I like quality music and if that is past or present doesn’t matter. One thing though that I do not grasp is Nu metal and the likes, uh, it gives me the creeps. Soulless.

DarkScene: What were the high and low points in your musical career so far?

Karl Beckman: I would say that ending up on such great label as Metal Blade is the biggest thing this far. Creating this band together with these fantastic people I have to work with and making our great debut album. Hope the future is bright though, bringing more high points to the ranks. Well, lows must be putting Mithotyn to final sleep which was never something I really wanted but things made us do it. But hey, I’m back.

DarkScene: Which bands should finally call it quits?

Karl Beckman: Haha who am I to judge? There are quite some but I don’t really want to mention them by name guess they’ve got their fan base anyway.

DarkScene: Which bands should finally get together again and make a reunion?

Karl Beckman: Norwegian Storm would be one fine act to see deliver once again.

DarkScene: We do a thing called word association. We mention a name and you give us the first thing that pops into your head:

Karl Beckman:
Quorthon = King of Kings!

Jon Nödtveidt = Left us way to early! R.I.P.
Lemmy = Legend!
Axl Rose = Overrated!

DarkScene: What are your thoughts – without mentioning any names – on all those „childish“ Pagan bands that distort the true spirit of the Nordic mythology?

Karl Beckman: I think with many of the bands that are in this genre the actual point of it is kind of lost. I'm not a big follower of the scene unfortunately but I've noticed that many of the bands these days sound extremely fun/happy which is something I can't grasp. This period of time that is pictured in lyrics and so forth wasn't really a happy time or jolly fun, it was hard times and an everyday struggle. What we try to capture is the hard and difficult mood/atmosphere and to portray that by using melodies and such that bring it to justice. Not saying we do it perfect, not at all, but this is the way we see it. This is not about presenting or making fun of our heritage. It has a more profound meaning. I don't even get the idea of doing it that way. This is stories of our ancestral past and they are to be told in a serious way or not at all. That's our interpretation.

DarkScene: What are your favorite records of 2010 (artist/record)?
