Aber dann habt ihr die "Through The Years" Collectors Box und bald darauf die DVD "One Foot In The Grave - The Other In The Trash" veröffentlicht. Was geschah in der letzen Dekade, also seit "B.A.C.K." heraus gekommen ist?

Man muss hier viele Faktoren miteinbeziehen.

DarkScene: Welches Equipment benutzt Du?

Morten Stutzer: 1.-Heaven And Hell - "The Devil You Know", 2.

English version:

DS: Hi Morten. This is Werner from www.darkscene.at. First of all, congratulations on your great comeback album "When Death Comes". For quite a while it seemed that Artillery would be a closed book. But then you released the "Through The Years" Collectors Box, the "One Foot In The Grave - The Other In The Trash" DVD and now a few months later a brand new album with a new line-up is popping up. What a pleasant surprise for thrash maniacs. So please tell us - what happened in the last decade since "B.A.C.K." has been released? What made you decide to give it another try with Artillery? And how did you get in touch with your new singer, Mr. Adamsen?

Morten Stutzer: Not much happened on the Artillery front. A single reunion show in Copenhagen in 2004. Nevertheless some of us still had the idea to reform the band in some form or another. After the release of the box-set we thought it was the right time, but definately with a new singer if we should have any chance to play live. We started to look for a singer and soon we were suggested Søren by some people in the business, so we contacted him and saw that he might just be what we were looking for.

DarkScene: Long-time fans of the band were a little bit worried - I would even say skeptical - if someone ever would be able to replace Flemming Ronsdorf on vocals properly. But I have to say that your "new" guy did his job perfect. Did you have any doubts concerning this matter at any point of time?

Morten Stutzer: It's always hard to replace a singer, especially if it's a good one, but we knew, that if we wanted to do anything with a little future, we would need to do it without Flemming. It was most neccessary, and we haven't any regrets at all.

DarkScene: The new album sounds very fresh and displays loads of energy. Did you already feel that your band was up to something great while recording "When Death Comes" or did you just realize this as you heard about the first euphoric reactions from fans and press alike?

Morten Stutzer: Already when writing the songs we had the feeling that it could be a good album, and when recording it we were all convinced, that we were on the right track, since all songs turned out better than we had hoped for, not least on the vocal side. So all in all, we never really doubted the material.

DarkScene: What seems kind of odd, is your cooperation with the Polish label "Metal Mind Productions" because mostly this company just re-releases old metal classics. Do you think Artillery is in good hands label-wise? Do they have proper distribution channels? Did you turn down other offers from different companies?

Morten Stutzer: Yeah, working with MM may seem a little odd, but they are very serious about things and do a fine job. Already with the box-set and the DVD we felt confident with them, and you should also remember, that the box-set was the main reason, that we got back together, so we kinda owe them this. Anyway we didn't shop for other deals, since MM already very early offered us to release a new album, if we decided to make one.

DarkScene: What's your take on the huge thrash metal comeback of previous years? A lot of young bands try to step into the footsteps of the older ones. What do you think - unnecessary or important?

Morten Stutzer: I think the thrash "revival" is great and it's also important for Artillery, since it keeps the whole scene fresh and floating. Not all new bands are great, but there are some highights here and there, and everybody's very keep on the whole thing, so I think it's great. There might not be any new Slayers or Exoduses, but I'm sure that some bands will make it in their own rights. So my answer is "important".

DarkScene: Let´s go back in time for a little bit -- to be more precise -- to the year 1990. At that time "By Inheritance" was released by Roadrunner, you got tons of brilliant reviews and a lot of people thought Artillery could become a huge band. Do you think you had a realistic chance to make it big then?

Morten Stutzer: Well, it's hard to tell. Under the right circumstances, maybe, but with one rotten apple in the basket it wasn't possible, as we have seen in retroperspective. However, music business unfortunately is not only about making good music. There are many things that should be taking into consideration. Promotion, management etc., and all this should be at the right place and at the right moment to use a cliche.

DarkScene: It´s widely known that Artillery together with Mercyful Fate and Pretty Maids are the - so to speak - "founding fathers" of the Danish metal scene. Does this make you a little bit proud?

Morten Stutzer: Yes it does, but I think it's not that simple. The mentioned bands all came out of a big layer of activities with a lot of people and bands involved, so we were just lucky to have something a little different than most others to offer. We were not the better musicians, but maybe more original than most other bands around.

DarkScene: Over the years, Danish bands made quite an impact internationally. Do you have an explanation why such a relatively small country could establish so many great quality rock and metal exports?

Morten Stutzer: I think it has something to do with attitude and originalism. Most danish bands are very ambitious about their music (but not about the business itself) and I think they put an honour into being original. They don't wanna sound like copycats and the Danish scene doesn't support that kind of bands at all.

DarkScene: What equipment do you use?

Morten Stutzer: Personally I use Ibanez Guitars (Roadstar II Series) with DiMarzio pick-ups, Ibanez Tube Screamer, Morley Wah and Marshall JCM800 amp.

DarkScene: What are your Top 5 all-time favorites (artist/record)?

Morten Stutzer: That's a tough one, since it changes all the time, but to mention a few bands: Black Sabbath, Exodus, Metallica, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Savatage, Mercyful Fate and many, many others.

DarkScene: What are your Top 5 favorites of 2008/09 (artist/record)?

Morten Stutzer: 1. Heaven And Hell - "The Devil You Know", 2. Metallica - "Death Magnetic". These are the only albums I've really enjoyed listening to. Most new albums are behind past glory (imo).

DarkScene: Any last words for our readers in Austria?

Morten Stutzer: Yeah, Thanx for taking your time to read this, and keep on supporting the metal scene. Hopefully we will return to Austria one day. I still remember some great gigs there in the early 90's, not least in the "Alter Schlachthof” - Wels!

DarkScene: Thank you very much for doing the interview.
