"Spin Me Like A Record" (from "Babylon Bombs")

Warum andere fragen, wenn man selber genau weiß was man will.

"When The Body Speaks" (from "Black:Anthem")

"Black Anthem" (from "Black:Anthem")

Wann darf man Euch mal in unsren Breitengraden live erleben?

English Version of the Gemini Five Interview with "Hot Rod":

DarkScene: First of all, congratulations on your awesome new album "Sex Drugs Anarchy" (to the review). That´s what I call hard rock for the new millennium – still hanging on to the cool 80ies roots but at the same time absolutely contemporary. It´s an album full of hits and definitely the glam/sleaze rock highlight of the year so far.

1: Rod: Thank you. I totally agree! I've never been this satisfied before with any recordings I've been involved in and you might how hard that is to get a 100% pleased with an album?
Just ask any musician!!!

DarkScene: The reviews should be overwhelmingly positive. How do you pull such hit songs out of your sleeves? Tell us something about the songwriting process in Gemini Five.

1: Rod: By talent of course! Most bands lack of sucha thing especially in the sleaze-genre. Tin or, and myself brings riffs and ideas to rehearsal and from there putting most pieces together. The hard stuff such as the riffs on "I am Hollow" and "Here 2day Gone 2mrw" is brought to the table by myself and most of the melodic stuff comes from Tin. I guess most bands is working like that only, we do it slightly better. Tin and I write the music and Tin's responsible for 90% of the lyrics. Half the song titles from me though...
That is our strenght, to deliver hard, tough yet melodic hardrock!

"Scream 4 Me" (live)

DarkScene: This is your third consecutive killer album. Each record had its own style. Still, all of them were fabulous which makes it really hard to pick a favorite from them. The debut had a sleazy punky approach, "Black:Anthem" had those cool and hip electro parts without neglecting the hard rock vibes and the new album sounds like a perfect tribute to the big bands of the 80ies full of arena rock hits. What´s your take on the evolution of the band and how do you view each album in retrospect?

1: Rod: To me personally our first album "Babylon Rockets" is way to lame and slick! Thats why Tin and I produced this third new album ourselves! This is how we wanted to be sounding in the first place.
2nd album "Black:Anthem" was consious choice of not following up with a same-sounding album as "Babylon Rockets". We have never considered ourselves as a glamband or a 80's band. We have obvious influences from the 80's but by "Black:Anthem" we proved to be more than a notalgic retro-band. Thats something I always liked with Mötley Crüe, each album came with a new approach, new logo and a new image. Still its was Mötley! Same with us, we got Tin's personal voice and our way of
putting songs together.

DarkScene: Besides the great songs, "Sex Drugs Anarchy" has a kick-ass production that´s just the icing on the cake of that album. How did you achieve that kind of quality in the production process?

1: Rod: By knowing what we wanted and most important of all, knowing exactly how we NOT wanted to be sounding!!! We are no new-comers and we pretty much know how to deliver either way.

DarkScene: What are your favorite Gemini Five songs and which ones do you enjoy most playing live?

1: Rod: Most of the new songs came together during rehearsal which gives them the very same feeling live and on record as they where ment to. Half the songs on "Black:Anthem" came to in the studio and some of those where very awkward to breath life into live. I love playing the new track "I am Hollow", "Sex Drugs Anarchy" and "Scream 4 me"! Also "TwentyFourSeven" gives me a kick in the head palying live. Somehow, this track is given more credit live than on the album...

DarkScene: How important was "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" for the band? Is it easier to get mainstream recognition doing a hard rock cover of a well-known song or was it just mere coincidence that you picked that song for your very first single and video?

1: Rod: Putting out a cover of an already succesful song is NEVER a coincidence! Radio are still airing the single and people are still requesting the track at our shows. But I wouldnt say that the single is/was important or crucial to us as a band or career.

DarkScene: Who was your inspiration or who were your idols over the years? Listening to the new record, it´s pretty obvious that you like rock icons like Mötley Crüe, W.A.S.P., Skid Row or Alice Cooper. Is my assumption correct?

1: Rod: Yes, but neither Tin or I am inspired by Alice Cooper. That's just a coincidence since Tin's voice may sometime resemble Alice's. We've gotten that since the first album...

DarkScene: From day one Gemini Five has always had the proper looks and the proper image for this kind of music. I still remember the day – a few years ago – after I received the "Babylon Rockets" Promo and after I checked out your webpage I thought that Gemini Five as a whole package was great. 100% professional and 100% rockstardom at the same time even in the early stages of your career. Were you born rockstars or where did that initial coolness come from?

1: Rod: Well, all members (Dee Dee - guitar, Slim Pete - drums, Tin Star - lead vocals & guitar & Hot Rod - bass) in this band has been handpicked from what each person can contribute to the band in the big picture. To me details are the most important thing regarding songwriting and image etc.
I mean, you get a whole picture from all the details and/but a image could easily fall apart cause of the details are way too cheesy or badly put together.
I've always been very aware of all the above and I'll take your words above as a compliment since I've been in charge of the approach, websites and artwork cd cover and booklets from the get go!
Thank you :)

DarkScene: What´s the status of Gemini Five? How big are you in your home country Sweden? How big is the fan and media interest in the band internationally? In my opinion with three great albums like you have done you should get much more recognition.

1: Rod: Yes, we're worth a LOT more recognition, I agree!
Media are still bone headed and are still covering bands that was hot years ago! By this new album we're getting alot of mer coverage than the two previous albums combined. Which is a very good thing of course since we're releasing the best damn album of this hardrock sleaze genre from Sweden ever!

DarkScene: Despite getting rave reviews for your records it seems that you still are having trouble reaching your potential target group outside of Scandinavia to a satisfying degree. In the rest of Europe your records are pretty difficult to get. I don´t even want to mention America. Do you get angry that the promo activities as a whole aren´t that effective?

1: Rod: Yes! We're putting all our efforts and hearts into our work and art and of course we wanna reach as many people as possible! I've always said; If you wanna do something right or "your way" you need to do it yourself! Unfortunally, the distribution and promotional business is out of our control. Especially outside Scandinavia. That's why we do everything ourselves regarding artwork, websites and we even took control of the producing aspect of the new album. Why spend time on arguing with an outside input when we know what to achieve from the get go!
It's here where You the Fans can make a difference by asking your local cd store to get our cd's and also ask your clubs and promotors to book the band. If people dont ask these things no promotor or booking agency will pay attention, which in the end will end up in a great band will not get enough recognition!

DarkScene: A lot of our Darkscene writers are crazy hard rock, glam and sleaze maniacs who didn´t even leave their house in the 80ies without back up hairspray and eyeliner. We have been following this scene for more than 20 years now and finally for the past few years glam/sleaze/hard rock is making a big comeback especially thanks to Swedish bands. Besides yourselves, bands like Hardcore Superstar, Crashdiet or The Poodles or even really young bands like Danger are living proof of that. In past interviews a lot of your Swedish peers were saying really good things about the Swedish rock scene in general. Are Swedes so much more talented and cooler than the rest? Why do you think this kind of music made such a revival, especially in your home country?

1: Rod: I honestly wouldnt say that swedish bands more talented then lets say American or European sleaze/bands. Well I guess that there's a sleaze revival at this point but most bands will never get signed since they are not about the songwriting. The image can never be an excuse for lack of talent.
Remember, never confuse lack of talent for being a genius...

DarkScene: Have you ever thought about "What could have been…" if you recorded songs like "Scream4Me" or "All Pistols" in 1989? I´m talking about breaking out big time, having 7 figure sales numbers, etc.

1: Rod: Probably yes! Also we look cooler than most 80's pussybands!

DarkScene: How important do you think is the Mötley Crüe reunion for bands like yourselves and could the new Mötley Crüe record maybe increase the interest in this kind of music in general?

1: Rod: Some I guess. But for me Gemini Five, CrashDiet (to the CrashDiet Interview) and Hardcore Superstar (to the Hardcore Superstar Interview) are so much more interesting nowadays. We are getting a lot of recognition on the latest Crüe-albums reviews, so maybe it will increase records sales for us. Dont get me wrong, Mötley to me is my absolut favorite band of all times but I prefer their 80's and early 90's stuff.

DarkScene: Do you have some kind of contact with the aforementioned bands from Sweden in any way. Do your paths cross once in a while?

1: Rod: We're great friends with Hardcore Superstar and CrashDiet. We have collaborated with CrashDiet's Martin Sweet on three tracks on the new records. Also I cross Martin Sweet's (CrashDiet guitarist) paths on a daily basis since Im sharing an appartment with him. Dont worry, we're straight.
I grew up with the HCSS boys in my hometown of Göteborg. We're not involved so much in other bands since all members prefer to hang with non-musicians. I simply have no interest in most established bands since to me they all suck both as bands and as persons...

DarkScene: Who will finally initiate the what we call „Swedish Sleaze-Glam-Hardrock-World Tour“ ? We suggest the following bands (in no particular running order except for Europe as headliners):
Europe, Gemini Five, Hardcore Superstar, Crashdiet, The Poodles, Wig Wam (I know – they´re from Norway though) and Danger. How does that sound to you? That would be the ULTIMATE show highlight of the coming years. Somebody should really start thinking about this.

1: Rod: I would say: Hardcore Superstar, CrashDiet and Gemini Five. Not particular in that order.

DarkScene: What´s next for Gemini Five? Any tour plans (including Austria or Southern Germany)?

1: Rod: We have shows in both Germany and Switzerland coming up in October. Please visit our websites for further notice regarding more shows in Bayern or/and Austria:

DarkScene: Finally – what´s your all-time top five, recent top five and your favorite song as of now?

1: Rod:
All-time top five:
Mötley Crüe - "Shout at the Devil"
Kiss - "Alive II"
Marilyn Manson - "Mechanical Animals"
Pretty Boy Floyd - "Leather boyz with electric toyz"
Pink Floyd - "The Wall"
