Scroll down fort the english version of the interview:

DarkScene: Hallo Leif!

Leif Edling: Ich muss dir wieder völlig zustimmen!

Was sind denn deine Highlights?

Monster Magnet "God Says No"
Motorhead "Motorhead"
Blood Ceremony "The Eldrich Dark"
Bachman Turner Overdrive "Not Fragile"
Uriah Heep "Salisbury"

DarkScene: Deine fünf all-time Lieblingsalben (artist/record):

Black Sabbath "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"
Uriah Heep "Demons and Wizards"
Rainbow "Rising"
The Beatles "Abbey Road"
Radiohead "Ok Computer"

ENGLISH VERSION OF THE INTERVIEW:

DS: Hi Leif! Being a faithful, long-term Candlemass fan who has been following everything you do musically, it is a great honor for me to do this interview with you. Thank you. Congratulations on one the best and most charismatic albums of this year. How content are you with "Avatarium" and how are the reactions so far?

Leif Edling: I’m very proud of the album and how it turned out, and I must say that the reactions so far have been pretty overwhelming! Nice words from everywhere so I can’t be happier.

DarkScene: How did "Avatarium" come to life? Looking from the outside in, this album came
as a total surprise...

Leif Edling: I almost formed a doomband with Michael Åkerfeldt a year ago, but it never happened so I phoned Marcus up who’s got a small studio nearby where I live. He helped me record a few demo tracks, and they became Avatarium!

DarkScene: How long did you work on the album? Did you write those songs specifically for "Avatarium" or did you use "old" material that's been around for a while?

Leif Edling: I wrote for about 9 months in total. Didn’t use any old material at all. I just wrote for Avatarium and it was a joy to put the songs together. This time anyway, hehe….

DarkScene: To what degree did the rest of the band contribute to the songwriting, especially Markus Jidell?

Leif Edling: Most songs were written when we formed the band. But Marcus has got a very good ear for music so he helped me with some arrangements and of course his guitar work. His playing on these songs is soo good!

DarkScene: "Doom" still is the main "ingredient" of your work. On one hand, "Avatarium" has that old school touch with those psychedelic "footnotes" hinting at the 70ies. On the other hand, there is that epic atmosphere, that provides something very special. The combination of these elements makes it sound very unique. What's your take on that?

Leif Edling: I agree totally! This is what we aimed for. And with Jennie-Anns voice the magic is complete!

DarkScene: That wonderful voice from Jennie-Ann Smith is absolutely the icing on the cake. She sounds almost hypnotic. Her dramatic yet dreamy voice is the perfect counterpoint to the heaviness of the band. I would even go so far to say that she has a little bit of a jazz or soul flair to her voice which makes it sound even better. I have never heard anything comparable in the doom sector. Please give us your thoughts?

Leif Edling: Again….i can’t agree more! She’s got a quite unique voice that makes the songs become very unique and special. To me it’s like having both Robert Plant and Ronnie James Dio on vocals at the same time.

DarkScene: When did you decide to use a female voice for "Avatarium"?

Leif Edling: I know it’s an "in" thing with female vocals these days, but to be totally honest, we looked for a male vocalist at first.

DarkScene: How did you find Jennie-Ann Smith and what was her musical resume before doing this album?

Leif Edling: Jennie was Marcus girlfriend (now wife) and we decided to try her out when we couldn’t find any male singer for Avatarium. She blew me away totally when I heard about one verseline from "Moonhorse". I knew right away that she would be the perfect singer for this.

DarkScene: Would you agree that the combination between this heaviness from the band and that ease of Jennie-Ann's voice is that one thing that makes "Avatarium" so very special?

Leif Edling: Absolutely! That’s a dangerous combination right there, hehe….

DarkScene: Besides "Moonhorse" and "Bird Of Prey" I really really love "Boneflower" and "Lady In The Lamp". What are the highlights of the album from your point of
view?

Leif Edling: I really love "Moonhorse" and "Bird of Prey", but I must also say that I got a soft spot for "Tides of Telepathy" as well….

DarkScene: Is Avatarium a one-off project or a real band?

Leif Edling: It’s a real band and we can’t wait to go out and play LIVE!!

DarkScene: I don't really want to put a label on Avatarium. Please allow me to name a few bands whose spirit could to some degree be found in "Avatarium". What are your thoughts of those bands and please share your view of my assessment...

Leif Edling:
Lordian Guard: …never heard…

Abstrakt Algebra: I don’t think there’s much AA in Avatarium, but the album was good! (to the classic review)

Rainbow: Lot’s of old Rainbow in our music. Fantastic band! Such a shame that Cozy Powell died and there can be no true re-union

Tiamat: Haven't listened so much to Tiamat, but it’s a good band.

Black Sabbath Of course there’s some Sabbath in Avatarium, but maybe not so much you would think….

Candlemass Great band, but I tried hard not to make Avatarium sound like C-mass. Think I succeeded in that

The Devils Blood: Good band, but there’s no DB in Avatarium.

Jethro Tull Another fantastic band! The entire Moonhorse verse is so Jethro!

DarkScene: As I mentioned before, I'm a Candlemass fan from the beginning. But after the two masterpieces "Death Magic Doom" and "King Of The Grey Islands" I thought that "Psalms For The Dead" was kind of a step back and somehow showed that the band didn't function as well as before. What do you think?

Leif Edling: Can’t disagree more. Think "Psalms For The Dead" is a great album and as good as "Death Magic Doom"! Songs like "Prophet", "Waterwitch", "Black as Time" and the titletrack are essential parts of our liveset with C-mass. Maybe you need to listen a bit more to it?

DarkScene: Ok…I’ll follow your words….I apologize for including questions concerning Candlemass in this interview but I just have to get your take on certain issues. After Rob's departure, as of now, is Candlemass officially on hiatus or do you just take a little album-break? Can we maybe hope for an album with Mats Leven? We all know that he's capable of singing in Candlemass...

Leif Edling: Break? What break? Candlemass have been playing all year and we got loads of gigs in the pipeline for the next. Mats is a super singer and the gigs have been fantastic! No record planned though….

DarkScene: You are a true rock icon. You have never denied your roots and you never tried to hop onto trends that come and go anyways. Did you ever at one point in your career think to adapt your sound to "fit in"? A lot of well known acts did...

Leif Edling: Never! Adaption is not my style. I rather go in a different direction than be trendy. The day I sell out will never come! I hope not anyway, hehe…

DarkScene: Do you agree that your authentic approach and your honest work is the reason for your success? A lot of your peers are long gone...

Leif Edling: Yes. If you are true to your sound and style, and if you’re good, you will be listened to and have some form of success. I truly believe this. Shit bands will come and go, but real talent will absolutely have its reward.

DarkScene: Has there ever been a moment in your career where you thought of quitting?

Leif Edling: We did quit back in 93, and there was a couple times during the Messiah years that I really wanted out. But Candlemass is my child so I hung in. Being in this band is like a marriage…you’re in for life…in good times and in bad.

1: You have been dealing with the music business for almost three decades by now. In a few sentences, can you describe how the business changed over the years and how did you change as a consequence of it?

Leif Edling: Thanks to the downloading, it’s more difficult to sell records nowadays, and you don’t get much when signing with the labels. You have to work harder to survive in this business now, compared to let’s say 10 years ago, and in the eighties when we started Candlemass. It’s a tough job, but fun. Most of the time anyway.

DarkScene: Do you follow recent releases? Are there any "new" bands that you like?

Leif Edling: Don’t follow all the new stuff that is coming out. But I do like band like Jex Thoth, Blood Ceremony and Ghost.

DarkScene: What were your personal highlights of your long and successful career?

Leif Edling: Too many to mention, but Dynamo 88 was great, and also many of our gigs and tours back in the day. It was fantastic to get a grammy for the white reunion album 2005 and I’m very proud of the fact that Sweden Rock Magazine this year voted us best Swedish rock/metal band EVER!

DarkScene: Which five of your own albums would you take with you on a deserted island?

Leif Edling: I don’t listen to my own albums, but 5 of the best are "Epicus…", "Nightfall", first Krux album, "Death Magic Doom" and the Avatarium album.

DarkScene: From a musical standpoint, do you still have a dream that you want to "reach" as a musician?

Leif Edling: Yes, make a singer/songwriter album…and sing in Swedish. That would be a dresm come true. Hopefully one day I’ll have the time to do it...

DarkScene: Your five recent favorite albums?

Leif Edling: Impossible question, but 5 albums I’ve listened to over the weekend are,

Monster Magnet "God Says No"
Motorhead "Motorhead"
Blood Ceremony "The Eldrich Dark"
Bachman Turner Overdrive "Not Fragile"
Uriah Heep "Salisbury"

DarkScene: Your five all-time favorite albums?

Leif Edling: Another impossible question….but here’s five albums that I think are absolute masterpieces:

Black Sabbath "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"
Uriah Heep "Demons and Wizards"
Rainbow "Rising"
The Beatles "Abbey Road"
Radiohead "Ok Computer"
