DarkScene: Hi Richard.

Da habe ich dann beschlossen Charred Walls Of The Damned zu gründen.

Was hast du sonst so getrieben...

Of The Damned Werk rechnen. Was darf man sich davon erwarten?

DarkScene: Orientieren sich Charred Walls Of The Damned bewusst in Richtung Control Denied.

Vor allem "Halloween", "The Fog" und "Prince Of Darkness".

Richard Cristy: Ohne Frage das "Charred Walls of the Damned" Album.

Richard Cristy: New Kids On The Block, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Blackeye Peas, John Mayer, Ich hasse Pop Musik !

Richard Cristy:

Nevermore = 100

english version of the interview
-------------------------------------------------------

DarkScene: Hi Richard. Charred Walls Of The Damned rose from the ashes of the phoenix. Please give us some insight of how this project, the album and the line-up of the band evolved. It most likely didn’t happen overnight, did it?

Richard Cristy: It slowly evolved during the past five and a half years that I’ve lived in New York City. Since leaving Iced Earth to join The Howard Stern Show I’ve really missed playing in a band and I continued to play drums every day and also played guitar every day while I lived here in New York. I’ve been writing a lot of music in the past five and a half years and about two years ago I realized that I had some pretty awesome songs and that I had enough songs for a full album. That’s when I decided to form Charred Walls of the Damned.

DarkScene: Are you solely responsible for the songwriting and the lyrics or did the other guys contribute to some degree as well?

Richard Cristy: I wrote all of the music and lyrics and played all of the instruments and also sang vocal ideas on the original demo recordings for the album. I knew though that once we got into the studio with the other guys that I would want to get their input as well to make the songs sound much better. Jason and I have written songs together since back in 2000 when Jason first built Audiohammer Studios and we work great together. Jason and I got together for pre production for two days before we started tracking music and Jason listened to all the songs and shortened parts that he thought should be shorter and basically tightened the songs up and made them much better. Tim and Steve also had some great ideas for the songs as well.

DarkScene: Who would’ve been the „alternative cast“ for your band? If Tim wouldn’t have been available, which other singers were on your list?

Richard Cristy: Well Tim was definitely my first choice but if he wasn’t available I probably would have put an audition call out on a website like Youtube.com because that’s a great way to find talent nowadays, that’s how Journey and Boston found their new singers. I also love Warrell Dane’s voice and Deron Miller from CKY’s voice so they would probably have been a consideration too.

DarkScene: How long have you been brainstorming ideas and writing songs for Charred Walls Of The Damned?

Richard Cristy: I’ve been writing riffs and working on songs for the past five and a half years but I did most of the work for the Charred Walls of the Damned album in the past two and a half years. I wrote the all of the lyrics for the album in early 2009. The songs were constantly evolving though and changing up until the final recording at Audiohammer Studios in July 2009.

DarkScene: Do you consider Charred Walls Of The Damned a “real” band which will continue to release albums in the future or is this just a one off project?

Richard Cristy: Yes I definitely consider this a real band and I want it to continue for a very long time. I’m looking forward to touring with this band this summer all over the world and I’ve already written 8 songs for the next Charred Walls of the Damned album which I hope to record by the end of this year. The songs are incredible and I can’t wait for people to hear them!

DarkScene: Do you plan on doing some live shows? Maybe even a full tour? If you had the choice – with which bands would you like to share the stages?

Richard Cristy: Yes I’m talking with some booking agents right now about booking some Charred Walls shows this summer. We’ll have to work out everyone’s schedules because we are all very busy. I’ll have to work around my vacations on The Howard Stern Show, Tim has other bands that he plays in, Jason is busy as a producer, and Steve has a daytime job and other bands, but we will definitely be working out our schedules so that we can at least do some week long or two week long tours and also some festivals this summer. I would love to share the stage with the festivals that Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax are doing! Those are going to be some legendary shows and it would be a dream come true for me if Charred Walls got to play any of those festivals!

DarkScene: Besides all the praise for a terrific album with a lot of awesome songs I also have to point out something negative about the album. Who the hell is responsible for the artwork and the band logo? To me, the artwork makes the album look like a demo from an underground band. Something obviously didn’t turn out right in that department. Do you agree?

Richard Cristy: Well honestly we didn’t have much money for artwork and design for the album and I think the artwork looks great for the money that we had, but also I think the booklet artwork looks much better than the cover of the digipack. The reason we used a small section of the artwork for the digipack is because we wanted fans to be surprised when they pulled out the booklet and saw the full artwork. Chet Zar did the artwork and I think he did a really awesome job with the full artwork on the album booklet and Brian Ames from Metal Blade did the layout and logo and I really love the logo and I think he did a great job with it.

DarkScene: Your last internationally recognized contribution to the world of Heavy Metal was on Iced Earth‘s "The Glorious Burden" album. After that we didn’t hear too much from Richard Christy except from you being part of Leash Law and your participation in the Howard Stern Show. What other things did you pursue during this period of time?

Richard Cristy: I’ve been very busy working on The Howard Stern Show and also working for Howard Stern’s television channel Howard TV and I’ve also become a stand up comedian and toured the U.S. and Canada as a stand up comedian. I’ve also acted in some movies like the film "Albino Farm", a really cool horror movie, and “Harold and "Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay" a hilarious comedy movie that came out in 2008. I also do a lot of writing and have written several movie scripts in the past several years.

DarkScene: How did you manage to get the gig at the aforementioned legendary Howard Stern Show? Is Howard easy to get along with or can he be a real pain in the ass to work for?

Richard Cristy: Howard is amazing to work for, he’s the best boss that I’ve ever had. He encourages us to be very creative and he is very down to earth and laid back. Every day at work is a lot of fun and I’m so thankful that I have a day job that I can come to and laugh and have fun all day. I’ve been sending comedy material to Howard’s show since the 1990’s and he’s been playing my comedy material on the air for a very long time, even long before I worked there, so in 2004 when there was a job opening on The Howard Stern Show, I auditioned and got the job, it was a dream come true!

DarkScene: Being a hardcore Chuck Schuldiner fan, I obviously have to ask one question concerning Control Denied (zum "Fragile Art Of Existence" Classic Review). There are rumors that a complete record is collecting dust in someone’s vault. Will this see the light of a release eventually? Did Chuck contribute to this album?

Richard Cristy: Yes I’m very happy to say that this year we will be working on finishing the second Control Denied album! There were some legal issues with the record label that was involved with the album but that has now been cleared up and I’m so excited that we can finally finish the album! I’m very close friends with Chuck’s family and also Jim Morris, Tim Aymar, Shannon Hamm, and Steve DiGiorgio and we’re all talking now to coordinate our schedules so that we can finish the recording this year. My drums and Chuck’s guitars were recorded in December of 2000 and in 2001 so we will just need to record all of the other parts to finish the album.

DarkScene: If you plan on releasing another Charred Walls Of The Damned album, what can we expect to hear?

Richard Cristy: Well I’ve already written 8 songs for the next album and I am so excited because the songs are really incredible. Tons of melody, super heavy, some crazy blast beats but also some slower songs, there’s a lot of variety in the new songs. If you love the first album then you will definitely love the second album, it’s a natural progression and I can’t wait to get back into the studio to record these new songs!

DarkScene: I noticed some similarities in the songwriting of Charred Walls Of The Damned and Control Denied. Was this intentional? If so, how did you manage to keep that “vibe” although all the songs on "Fragile Art Of Existence" were written by Chuck?

Richard Cristy: I think it was natural that I was influenced by Control Denied but not intentional. When I was writing the songs I didn’t think about wanting them to sound like Control Denied, I think it just naturally happened that way because I played in the band and I love Chuck’s music. Chuck and I both loved a lot of the same bands and I’ve been a big Death fan since I was in high school so Chuck is definitely an influence on my songwriting.

DarkScene: To all the Death/Control Denied fans out there, could you please summarize in a few sentences what Chuck Schuldiner was all about?

Richard Cristy: Chuck was the biggest heavy metal fan that I’ve ever met in my life. He was a musical genius and also a big fan of heavy metal. I remember when we both met King Diamond for the first time we were both very nervous and excited because King Diamond was one of our musical heroes! Chuck is an inspiration to me and to heavy metal fans all around the world and he would be so happy to know that people all around the world still listen to his music every day and even have tribute concerts for Chuck. He was the most talented musician I’ve ever met and also the friendliest and most humble person that I’ve ever met. I miss him every day.

DarkScene: Who are your personal musical idols? Which musicians do you admire and who did influence you most?

Richard Cristy: Steve Harris is definitely a huge influence on me as a musician and songwriter. James Hetfield is a big influence. Alex Van Halen was my first big drumming influence. Shannon Larkin from Wrathchild America is a huge drumming influence on me. King Diamond is one of my idols and a huge influence on my songwriting. Definitely Chuck Schuldiner is my musical hero. Probably my biggest musical influence is the film maker and composer John Carpenter. I love his films and I think his soundtracks are genius, especially "Halloween", "The Fog", and "Prince of Darkness".

DarkScene: Of all the albums you played on, which ones are your favorites and which ones are you most proud of?

Richard Cristy: Definitely the Charred Walls of the Damned album, I’m so proud of it and it is very special to me because it is the first album that I’ve done where I wrote all of the music and lyrics. Death’s "The Sound of Perseverance" is my proudest drumming album because I’ve been a huge fan of Death for a long time and I have so many great memories of making that album with Chuck, Shannon, Scott, and Jim Morris.

DarkScene: What band(s) should pack it in and call it a day once and for all?

Richard Cristy: New Kids On The Block, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Blackeye Peas, John Mayer, I hate pop music!

DarkScene: What band or musician do you still listen to when no one else is around?

Richard Cristy: I’m a big Stryper fan and have been a big fan of theirs since the 80’s. Although I do know a lot of metal heads who love Stryper too but some people are a little embarrassed by it.

DarkScene: What rock/metal album did you buy that you were most disappointed in? Which album has been the biggest surprise to you?

Richard Cristy: I remember buying Stryper’s album "In God We Trust" and being really disappointed in it because I loved their previous album "To Hell With The Devil" so much, but then eventually after listening to it several times I started to like it a lot and now I love that album. When I heard the Demon Hunter album "The Tryptich" I was really surprised because I didn’t really know much about them and now they are one of my favorite bands.

DarkScene: Name the high and low points of your music career?

Richard Cristy: The high point is releasing the Charred Walls of the Damned album and the low point is when I had to quit Iced Earth in 2004 because I loved that band so much but had to quit to audition for the job at The Howard Stern Show, but in the end it turned out to be the best decision because now I work for The Howard Stern Show and it’s my dream job.

DarkScene: If you were asked to play in the following bands what are the chances for you to play the drums for them on a scale of 1 (no way in hell) to 100 (I would sell my grandmother for that job)? Comment the options…

Richard Cristy:
Metallica = 100
Poison = 1
U2 = 50
Kiss = 40
Iced Earth = 50
Steel Panther = 40
AC/DC = 70
Nevermore = 100
Anthrax = 100
